Thought leaders at the non-profit publisher MedicateOH have worked this summer to develop an interactive online Cannabis Writers’ Workshop launching Monday, July 25th. The 5-session workshop is designed for students hoping to develop career skills for Ohio’s cannabis industry as well as for advocates wishing to strengthen and amplify their messaging.
The offering from the publisher comes as the state’s industry appears poised for explosive growth in 2023. Qualified communicators will be needed to capture the various unique stories that shape the Ohio cannabis industry.
About MedicateOH
The publication MedicateOH.com was founded in 2019 by journalists and marketing professionals who were also some of the state’s first legal cannabis users. Today, MedicateOH reaches more than 10,000 Ohioans with legally and medically-guided content about the medical marijuana program and cannabis as medicine.
MedicateOH was recently selected as one of 26 independent news publishers to receive personalized support and up to $6,000 of funding from Lion Publishers to help build a more sustainable small businesses. MedicateOH is the state’s only non-profit cannabis niche digital publication.
About the Workshop
The MedicateOH Cannabis Writers’ Workshop will gather media experts and MedicateOH staff to share tips on developing cannabis content that’s appropriate and impactful.
The Workshop will be held via Zoom. Courses will be held Monday nights at 8:00 p.m., July 25-Monday Aug 22. Each 90-minute session will be interactive, but it will be recorded. (If you need to miss a session, you’ll be able to catch up by watching the video at a later time.)

About the Workshop’s Leaders
The workshop will be led by the MedicateOH team’s Publisher and Founder Gabrielle Dion, a writer and digital media expert with more than 25 years’ experience developing content for a wide variety of industries. Additionally, she’ll be joined by co-publisher Jim Goldschmidt and Editor in Chief Alex Pearson, both of whom worked strategically to build the publication.
Students will be coached on best practices in advocacy journalism, press release writing, story pitching and development, and other aspects of creating professional, high-quality content.
The workshop will cover the basics of journalism, learning how to craft a story, follow editorial guidelines, elements of successful stories, and much more. In another lesson, they’ll discover the impact, importance, and efficacy of advocate storytelling. Each session will be tailored to a specific area of writing and skill development.
Another area of focus in this workshop will be public relations, where students will have the chance to develop an elevator pitch, write a press release, and gain valuable knowledge for event planning, product launches, and other newsworthy happenings with cannabis brands.

Registration & Scholarships for the Workshop
The $200 tuition is tax-deductible. Receipts available for your records. Students will receive a link to the Zoom meetings upon payment. The sessions will be approximately 90 minutes long with a scheduled break in the middle.
Cannabis businesses are encouraged to sponsor a scholar or send a staff member. As brands continue to develop marketing events, social media, and networking, MedicateOH hopes to provide this opportunity to share tools for effective communications.
