Mintz famously encouraged DJ Alan Freed to play rhythm and blues (then called “race music”) on the radio, dubbing it “rock ‘n’ roll” to appeal to white audiences. The store’s legacy includes hosting the first rock concert, the Moondog Coronation Ball, in 1952.
