Nestled in Cleveland’s bustling Gateway District at 300 Prospect Ave., the new flagship store for Akron-based Klutch Cannabis is more than just a dispensary—it’s a modern twist on a cultural landmark. The building, once home to Record Rendezvous, a legendary record store pivotal in the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, now bridges two eras of counterculture: the rebellious rhythms of the 1950s and today’s legal cannabis movement. MedicateOH got a sneak peak of the new store, which is set to open to the public Friday, August 1st.

Klutch & Record Rendezvous: A Nod to History

Owned by music promoter Leo Mintz, Record Rendezvous was a trailblazer in the 1940s and 1950s. Mintz famously encouraged DJ Alan Freed to play rhythm and blues (then called “race music”) on the radio, dubbing it “rock ‘n’ roll” to appeal to white audiences. The store’s legacy includes hosting the first rock concert, the Moondog Coronation Ball, in 1952.

Klutch Cannabis has preserved elements of this history, retaining the building’s original stonework and mid-century exterior. Yet, the irony isn’t lost: a site that once sold “forbidden” music now sells once-illegal cannabis.

Employee and VIP Perks

The building provides staff with a rare retreat from the bustling sales floor. Upstairs, an expansive employee breakroom surpasses industry standards, particularly when compared to the typically smaller breakrooms observed in other dispensaries. This space includes convenient access to private restrooms, reserved exclusively for staff use. Since the second floor houses no retail products, its unobstructed windows allow natural light and scenic city views—an ideal setting for relaxation. Beyond the breakroom, the upper level features an array of management offices and a spacious open area designed to accommodate VIPs, investors, and special guests. Access is facilitated by an elevator located near the VIP entrance.

Unique Fulfillment Style

The facility employs a dual-mechanism system for secure product movement between vault and fulfillment areas:

  • Primary transport utilizes a pneumatic tube system for efficient, secure transfers
  • Secondary support provided by a dumbwaiter system to accommodate:
    • Fragile items requiring gentler handling
    • Oversized products exceeding tube capacity

This integrated approach ensures all inventory can be transported appropriately while maintaining security protocols and operational efficiency.

Accessibility

Klutch Cannabis’ Cleveland location offers excellent accessibility, starting with its level terrain and flat sidewalks leading to a flush entrance. The lobby seating seems a bit low to the ground, which can be a positive or a negative, depending on your needs. However, there are seating options with and without arms, which increases accessibility.

The counters at the cash registers and the kiosks are higher than what you might find in a grocery store, which could be difficult for some consumers. The spacious sales floor allows for easy navigation, with minimal sharp or narrow turns from entry to exit. The restroom, conveniently located near the cash registers, features a minimalist design with ample space, handicap rails, a fun mystery door, and a toilet that is not too close to the toilet paper dispenser

Staff & Community Commitment

Klutch emphasizes education and accessibility, with budtenders trained to guide both novices and connoisseurs. Their mission as a 100% Ohio-owned business underscores community ties, though some locals wonder if the building’s musical legacy could be honored more visibly—perhaps through a plaque or limited-edition “Record Rendezvous” strain.

The Bigger Picture

Klutch’s arrival signals Cleveland’s competitive cannabis market, blending commerce with cultural history. As the city’s cannabis scene grows, this location—once a cradle of rock ‘n’ roll—may yet become a hub for another kind of revolution.

Opening Date

The Cleveland Klutch Cannabis location will open its doors on August 1, 2025 at 10 AM. Be ready with your valid ID and Ohio medical marijuana card if you have one!

Hours of operation for the new Downtown location will be:

  • Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 10:45 PM
