Now that cannabis is legal for all Ohio adults 21 and up, many medical marijuana (MMJ) patients have been debating: Do I still need to keep my medical cannabis card?

The short answer is absolutely—and here’s why it still matters.

Legal Protections for Patients

In May, MedicateOH reported on the steep attrition rate to the state’s MMJ program while the Division of Cannabis Control upped the product amounts adult-use customers could buy. While Ohio’s adult-use cannabis law has made access easier for everyone, patients enrolled in the medical program still enjoy key legal protections that recreational users don’t.

Perhaps most importantly, having a valid medical card can offer legal clarity in situations involving divorce, custody battles, driving violations, probation, and parole. In many legal contexts, being a certified patient under a doctor’s care may help distinguish therapeutic use from recreational use—an important distinction in court. Judges, employers, and social services agencies may view documented medical use more favorably, especially when medical necessity is backed up by state registration.

Practical Perks: Savings, Service, and Shorter Lines

Beyond the legal benefits, maintaining your Ohio medical marijuana card comes with real, everyday advantages.

Pricing is one of the biggest advantages: Medical cardholders in Ohio don’t need to pay the 10 percent excise tax that adult-use customers do. Medical cannabis patients are also often eligible for discounts of up to 30 percent on certain days at many dispensaries, including Bloom.

Over time, the savings can easily offset the cost of getting or renewing a card—typically between $50 to $75 through a reputable certifying physician. And with the state of Ohio waiving the $50 annual fee, patients can know that the physician’s recommendation fee is the only annual charge they’ll incur.

Skip the long waits: Medical-only dispensary lines are shorter, and many dispensaries prioritize medical patients with faster service and express checkout.

Doctor oversight still matters. If you’re using cannabis to manage chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, or another qualifying condition, having a certified medical cannabis doctor involved in your care means you’re not just self-dosing—you’re treating your condition with a specific plan. A doctor or MMJ provider can often look at your other prescriptions and speak with you about interactions and other points of concern after looking at your chart.
