Last summer, Pure Ohio Wellness became one of the first licensed cannabis cultivators and processors in Ohio to receive dual-use certification, positioning the company at the forefront of the state’s adult-use cannabis rollout. To meet increasing demand, the Springfield-based vertically-integrated cannabis company doubled its flower production and maximized its cultivation canopy. Still in progress, their expansion will add flower rooms, packaging lines, an edibles kitchen and more that’s yet to be announced.

But Pure Ohio Wellness (POW) isn’t just scaling up its facilities—it’s expanding its impact. MedicateOH got a peek at how the company is growing to supply Ohio’s adult-use market while staying grounded in its medical and community roots.

Planted in Purpose: A Pure Ohio Beginning

Founded in 2018 by professional motorcycle racer Larry Pegram, Pure Ohio Wellness (POW) started as a family-owned company serving Ohio’s medical cannabis program. Under Pegram’s vision and COO Tracey McMillin’s leadership—who brought medical administration experience and local ties—the company built a 53,000 sq ft cultivation and processing facility near Dayton. POW also opened dispensaries in Dayton and London, hiring roughly 90 employees, including veterans and patients, to cultivate local jobs and community ties.

In addition to their expansion of their facility, Pure Ohio Wellness has also expanded their commitment to their employees and efforts to make an impact on the local community.

Sales Manager Amber Miller led our tour of the facility, asking employees to share what made them proud of working there. Several of the diverse workforce at POW shared feelings of being included and valued. Each month, the team selects a different nonprofit to which they donate. For June, they are donating a percentage of Skunky Jack sales to the local nonprofit, Have a Gay Day, based in Dayton, an organization that provides resources and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals in our area.

Said Amber, “Pride Month may only come once a year, but repping the POW logo has been my proudest accomplishment. At Pure Ohio Wellness, we’re not just a team—we’re a high-functioning family, rooted in kindness, compassion, and the power of the plant. As the Sales Manager, I’m beyond proud to help our vibe thrive. It’s amazing what can grow when you plant purpose and water it with passion.”

POW’s Commitment to Quality and Consistency

Employees we spoke with also emphasized the company’s commitment to producing high-quality, medical-grade products. One team member who’s worked across both the grow and dispensary sides of the business described how POW has maintained a patient-first approach—prioritizing affordability, clean growing practices, and quality control. Popular strains like Tahoe Jack, Hiker’s Blend, Blue Blast, and Animal Mints reflect a strong genetics program guided by both team expertise and patient feedback.

One point of interest about the inconsistency among strain names in the dispensary is that naming strains presents a regulatory challenge in Ohio. A recent POW release “Alaska Thunderfunk” had to be amended to a slight variation on the popular strain’s official name, and other popular strain names have been outright rejected by the Division of Cannabis Control (DCC). The POW team is exploring creative alternatives like numerical naming systems or packaging cues to help patients navigate choices while staying compliant.

POW’s own stores in London and Dayton are carrying “Locally Grown”–a house brand available exclusively at a discounted price. Miller notes that this is their way of offering their most loyal dispensary patrons a more affordable product.

Behind the Scenes: A Look at Operations

Our tour moved through multiple departments, from fertigation and pest management to extraction and packaging.

  • Chase, a team member with a background in traditional farming, detailed POW’s precision fertigation methods. They start with water from a well, then employ a water softener and reverse osmosis filtration process to ensure a consistent, clean water supply. Chase and the fertigation team mix nutrients by hand for each flower room. Including flower, veg, and mom rooms, they go through 6-7,000 gallons of water a day.
  • Pest management, led by Isaiah, includes the use of beneficial insects for early intervention and a focus on cleanliness across grow rooms.
  • Cody from the cultivation team told us a little bit about the growing medium used for the plants called Pro-Mix HP, a peat moss and perlite mixture. The team is currently considering whether a move to coco might be right for POW’s plants. Coco coir is made from the husk of coconuts. Cody told us coco is less prone to evaporation, allowing them to use less water and dehumidification measures.
  • In the extraction lab, Andrew walked through the meticulous CO₂ extraction process, emphasizing terpene preservation and full-nug use for rosin production. New product lines like topicals and pre-rolls are in development. A pre-roll machine is in place and ready to go. Pre-rolls are not yet approved by DCC, but it’s expected soon.
  • On our tour day, Andrew was also pressing rosin, a process which uses heat and pressure to carefully extract the cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material. (See video below.) Live rosin is a solventless extraction process that preserves the full spectrum of cannabis compounds and is often thought to be superior in purity to distillate.
  • In the packaging department, we learned that plans are underway to switch to all bags from glass jars for flower. This move is part of POW’s strategy to keep pricing low and enhance shelf appeal as the adult-use market opens.

What do Patients and Consumers Say?

POW’s flower and vape pens earn praise on Reddit:

  • “Their live rosin carts are real good… For the money, some of the best in Ohio.”
  • “I’ve had their rosin in 510 cart. Pretty tasty and good buzz…”
  • “I enjoy their Blue Blast/Mad River Kush strain. It is one of the rare strains that isn’t limonene heavy and has been available fairly consistently for years.”
